In this news clip, the news
broadcaster reveals the story of two men that were found lying dead in the
street with a private citizen admitting to killing them. It was found later that this act of violence
was justified in that it was also an act of self-defense. The broadcaster says in the video: “Police
determined that the private citizen acted within the law when he tried to stop
the two armed robbers from fleeing the convenience store. The DA says the private citizen demanded that
they stop and wait for police. He says
then the robbers refused and pulled out their guns, the citizen shot them in
self defense.” This statement is an
example of “The last resort” and self defense because the citizen had no other
option than to shoot the robbers in his attempt to survive. This is also an example of counter violence
because the citizen reacted to the robbers pulling out their gun in his own act
of pulling out his own gun.
An act of violence in our country’s
history was the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This act of violence can be seen as an act of
terrorism against the United States.
There was not one primary target but an instrumental audience. This was an attempt for the Japanese to
instate fear to United States in their effort of seeming powerful. They wanted to claim their territory and show
the United States that they were not a country to be reckoned with. This act can be framed as terrorism because
it was an attack against our country by another. The Japanese may argue that it was a morally
right act because of our attempts at bombing their homeland. They could state it was an act of self-defense
or counter violence that makes the attack morally right.
I do not think that violence is ever
the answer unless it is an act of self-defense.
