A languaging strategy are the ways in which social movements phrase their words and ideas in order to achieve their goals and make their values known. One of the most important languaging strategies that social movements use is identification. One of the main purposes of identification is creating a bond or relationship with whoever you are talking to; whether it be one on one or to a whole group Another purpose of identification is to transform by means of making your purpose something that people may be able to understand or even relate to. In order to do this, your ideas must not seem too extreme, instead you should choose ideas that are relatable and not so far-fetched.
Languaging tactics on the other hand are smaller and more specific types of a strategy that work with other parts of speech to amplify the purpose of the idea. An important type of this is by using a slogan. Slogans are catchy or meaningful phrases that companies use to get their audience to buy their product. This is a social strategy that will stay with it's audience and remind them about their product regularly. For example, every time I think that I need to go grocery shopping I think of Publix's slogan "where shopping is a pleasure" combined with the great service I normally receive and I decide to shop there.
Social movements may use these strategies to their advantage. Social movements first must identify with their object to gain support and followers. Another way they may gain this following is through the use of a meaningful slogan. One of the best examples of a social movement with a slogan that identifies with its audience while reminding them of their cause is PETA's "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment or abuse in any way." It is through this slogan that PETA reminds the public what they are fighting (the protection of animal rights) as well as pulling on the emotional side of the argument to get the audience to relate by saying animals are not for us to do what we want with them.
