In chapter one it the book talks about what a Social movement are. Social movements challenge the conventional.  Their are many different types of social movement, so groups are frightening and very in your face while others blend in.  Some times it is had to come up with an exact definition but this chapeter focuses on making a  working definition to help us ensure we are writing about a social movement. There are certain characteristics a social movement must have. One is it must be at least somewhat organized. We must know who the leaders are and who the members are. The are campaigns their must be an order of command and have certain strategies witch require organization. Another characteristic is that there are an uninstitutionalized collectivities meaning that the people in the group came together by choice not force. Social movements must also be large in scale. It has to big in size to make a difference. Like the book puts it “one person marching for a thousand hours is not the same as a thousand people marching for one hour” (10). Social movements take time to happen one cannot accept them to happen over night and to really make a difference they have to stay relevant. They need to have events to keep people aware of their cause. Another characteristic is that a social movement must promote or oppose changes in society values and norms. Social movements are different than politics, religion, ect. Is because they are flexible in nature. Another social characteristic id insuring the legitimacy of the claims. Last but not leas is that social movements must be persuasive after all you are trying to see things through your perceptive.

PETA is an organizes and has many campaigns. It braught together many people that are for animal rights. PETA is definitely large in scale almost everyone I know has heard of them and they have been around making their presence for many years. PETA is against killing and harming animals. This organization is a perfect example of a social movement and everything that goes into it.
