People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an accomplished Animal Rights organization founded by Alex Pacheco and Ingrid Newkirk on March 1980. Its ideology can be defined by Ingrid Newkirk renowned quote that asserts. "When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness, and fear, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. Each one values his or her life and fights the knife." In this research essay, I will essentially illustrate how PETA employs Elizabeth Cherry's Cultural Strategies of the Animal Rights Movement theory to transform the perceptions of social reality and legistimize the Animal Rights Movement. Her theory encapsulates the effective strategies animal rights activists use to transform the values and actions of society. These strategies include the creation of a collective identity, and the shifting, expanding, blurring, and dismantling of cultural boundaries through focusing and universalizing tactics. Fundamentally, PETA implements these strategies through their dramatized guerilla theater style tactics that utilize graphic slogans to pressure the opposition and cultivate polarization, framing to present animal rights counter arguments and their faulty reasoning, and new communication's technology to share animal abuse stories that simultaneously fosters awareness and identification amongst members in society

ReplyDeleteThe Anonymous group has expanded itself by the use of YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and the media. With the New York Times, Fox News, nbc news, and many more, Anonymous has become a well-known “hacktivist group” by the majority. Many media articles describe this group as "a very loose and decentralized command structure that operates on ideas rather than directives." Having a group with no definitive leader can be a huge advantage especially for this group because if one member is arrested, there are still hundreds of others with enough knowledge and power to move the group. The Hacktivist group, Anonymous, has become extremely famous all over the internet because they fight for the public against the corrupted governments, monopolized companies, etc. Every day, the public can find an article on some new project they are working on, such as the hacking on the MIT website on January 11th.
Because the Anonymous group has concentrated on various subjects, there is no definitive goal to achieve, except to fight for the freedom of speech of the public. On my research paper I will focus on how Anonymous attacks governments and how these governments react. Anonymous was formed in 2004 in a website known as 4chan, where individuals could post anonymously about various conflicts worldwide. This group rapidly expanded and converted into what is known today as the Hacktivist/Anonymous group. Because there is no certain leader, no knows who really created this group; there may have not even been a single creator, but many.
The Anonymous group uses a language strategy known as Identification. When broadcasting their speeches and articles, the group always talks to the common people and shows us that they are one of us. This group always publicizes what has been hidden from us by large corporation and governments, causing us to sympathize with the hacktivists. When speaking to us, the group uses words such as “we” instead of “you” and “I,” causing us to believe that we are part of what they are planning, and that they are just like us; we become involved in their project. By using slogans, Ridicule, Obscenity, and using new communication technologies, Anonymous achieves their goal in getting out attention. Many of the videos the group makes show obscene scenes of soldiers attacking the common people for simply protesting for their rights. They currently hold a slogan, “We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us – always” causing many to remember and fear them, especially their enemies.
In the research paper, I will begin by giving a brief background of the group and how they originated. I will then address the topic I will discuss which will be their various attacks against corrupt governments.
In my analysis I will use the many articles from NBC News, The New York Times, and Fox News to show how popular they have really become, and how many governments are threatened by them.
Next, I will explain how Anonymous is a social movement and go into specifics about how they transform perceptions, legitimize themselves, prescribe their courses of action, mobilize their action, and sustain the social movement.
The Anonymous group will be known for a long period because they fight for the freedom of the people, and no matter how far we get, and how many goals we reach, there will always be something holding us back from complete freedom.
