Blog Post 10

The video I created was a slideshow of photos put together in order to give others insight on the Occupy Wall Street movement. The photos show an exigence in society to come together as one and speak to the top 1% of the wealthy individuals in this country. The video was accompanied by a song written by the artist known as Remy and goes into detail about what the movement is all about. The song calls all people to come together and join in protesting on Wall Street. It explains situations in today’s society that the top 1% has created to keep the other 99% below them. Those within the Occupy Wall Street movement are attempting to get the attention of those men and women in the top 1% and they plan on doing this by getting together large groups of people to protest and fill up Wall Street. By combining these photos with the song, the video I created can reach out to those who are unfamiliar with the movement and give them a preview. It transforms perceptions of social reality by reaching out to the majority of those in society, the “99 percent”. The people in this video can be seen protesting on the streets in large groups and usually holding posters. The posters these people create usually contain a slogan or catchy phrase that can be used to draw attention. The movement also uses polarization to unite society under one common goal; they believe that together they cannot be defeated.

Using a video was an easy decision for me because it allowed me to show others the truth about this movement. I was able to combine photos with video clips and at the same time, have a song playing in the background, all of which reach out to the viewer and offer valuable information about the movement. The video clip seen in my project shows officers arresting protestors on the streets while thousands of people chant in the background “the whole world is watching”. This is used in a way to intimidate the 1% by showing a strength in numbers of protestors taking part in the Occupy Wall Street movement. I was able to achieve my goal of spreading this movement by combining various aspects of the already large movement and sharing them to a group of individuals. Those taking part in the movement call themselves the “99 percent” which gives them the courage they need to stand up to the wealthy individuals in society and gives them a voice bigger than all the wealth in that top 1 percent. Awareness for this movement has been raised around the world and is continuing to spread. Protestors can be seen across the country occupying banks, corporate headquarters, board meetings, college and university campuses. One photo in the video shows local protestors in Tallahassee where they occupied Gaines Street in order to gain awareness from the media and society. These protestors will stop at nothing to get their voice heard and have made it their goal to create a more balanced distribution of income throughout the entire United States.
