1. Logos: This picture shows a specific fact and statistic about how many people die each year from smoking in the UK.
Pathos: The picture of the Clearzine Acne Solution is showing that the lady is a much happier person with the Clearzine Solution. One picture shows unsatisfactory whereas the other picture shows a happy person who used the acne product.
Ethos: Lebron James showing off his Nike brand shoe to the public is giving this picture credibility. The world known Lebron is showing that Nike is the shoe to wear. This not only gives credibility to Lebron but also to the company of Nike.
2. An example of a rhetorical situation today is the death penalty. The issue of whether one should get executed for killing someone has been a controversial issue for Americans as a long time doing. The audience in this issue is the people part of the Senate or House of Representatives and the citizens of America. The focus of exigence is dealing whether people should be executed if they have murdered someone or multiple people. The constraints of this issue is whether one is mentally ill when the act was happening. Should a person who cannot truly help themselves because of voices in there head be killed?
3. Rhetoric is the act of trying to persuade or trying to get someones attention by applying different approaches toward persuasion using emotions and facts. Rhetoric today is being used to persuade different people to different products, making a competition towards companies. Competition is good for America but sometimes we have to be careful about what way we are persuaded from rhetoric just because of who uses the product.

The
following advertisement illustrates Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. In the
accompanying advertisement, Pepsi contracted the highly respected and esteemed
Beyoncé Knowles to promote their product, hence establishing the products
credibility (Ethos). Moreover, the advertisement depicts Beyoncé dressed in her
performance outfit pushing a grocery cart overly stocked with Pepsi boxes. This
appeals to the audience emotionally (Pathos) in two ways: (1) It establishes
the common connection as a working citizen going grocery shopping, (2) It
emphasizes Pepsi’s popularity and it’s high consumer demand. Therefore, the
advertisement evokes sentiments of relatability and desirability towards
Pepsi. Subsequently, this advertisement also exemplifies (Logos) through the
word “Pepsi” and its universally known logo.
2.
An
example of a rhetorical situation from the public sphere is gender inequality.
Gender inequality is defined by the unequal treatment of individuals based on
their gender. The belief that females are naturally weaker and inferior sex to
men has been subconsciously ingrained into the minds of both men and women,
thereby generating immense disadvantages for women. The exigence of gender
inequality is that gender discrimination is to be abolished. Moreover, the
audience for this rhetorical situation includes the men and women who have been
subjugated to either the advantages or disadvantages that their associated
gender fosters. One constraints of gender inequality includes our male
dominated legislature. For instance, how can women gained rights if they are
not being properly represented in the government? Another constraint of gender
inequality is that most individuals fail to realize that gender inequality
still exists. Most people have the mentality that gender inequality was solved
with the passing of the Equal Rights Amendments.
3. At first, I gathered that Rhetoric was a
means to influence, inform, and inspire the audience through the use of
literature. However, after our class discussion, I now perceive Rhetoric to be
limitless, and not constrained by the bounds of literature. Rhetoric is a
concept utilized universally and ubiquitously, and can range vastly from literal
(direct) to metaphorical (indirect) standpoints. We should study Rhetoric to
become more efficient and effective communicators.

In the music video of “Estoy Enamorado,” Wisin y Yandel
use rhetorical strategies to help the general public understand the pains that
the immigrant community faces with some of the laws that have been passed. In
the beginning of the video, a Hispanic couple and their young daughter are
driving on a desert highway (most likely a Southwestern state), when they are
pulled over after being profiled by some police officers. The father/husband is
taken by the police and put into a holding center. This segment contains both
ethos and pathos. Emotionally, this can appeal to any member of a family. The
daughter and mother both look very frightened to be separated from their
father/husband, as would many fathers, daughters, or mothers to which this
appeals. Ethically, this appeals to anyone who would believe that it is morally wrong
to separate innocent families. Later in the video, there are a series of clips
where everyday human occurrences are happening, like a barista pouring a cup of
coffee, a mother pushing a stroller, and a boy selling oranges. Slowly in the
segment, these people performing these actions start to disappear, in order to represent what would
happen if these immigrants were removed from society. This is a logical appeal
because it is a visual and logical example of what would happen if these people
were deported.
2)In the sphere of college football, rhetorical situations
are present and severely intertwined throughout teams, players, officials, and
coaches. Recently, in the immediate public sphere of FSU, accusations of rape
were made towards the starting quarterback of the football team, Jameis Winston.
The exigence of this rhetorical situation is the mere fact that Jameis was
accused of this crime, and it certainly needed a solution under the law.
Although it may seem that the audience of the rhetorical situation was the
large base of fans at FSU, these people had little to no effect on the outcome
of the decision on whether or not to take Jameis Winston’s case further. The
true audience was the attorney general and other state employees who had power
in the decision-making process. In the time it took for the attorney general to
decide whether or not Jameis Winston’s case should have gone to trial, many
facts arose about the case, including the knowledge of alcohol involvement, the
discovery of another man’s DNA in the victim’s underwear, and many loopholes in
the accusation as a whole. Since these facts are part of the reason that the
attorney general decided not to continue the case, these facts can certainly be
considered constraints on the rhetorical situation.
3) Rhetoric, filtered down to its purest form, is
persuasion. Although there are many different approaches to rhetoric, to
persuade is the main goal of rhetoric. It is important for us as students, and
for us as society to study rhetoric because it is truly everywhere, and we must
not be misled. Especially for we who live in Western culture, we live in a consumerist
society. People everywhere are constantly trying to get us to buy their
product, or use their service. Although many of us are highly educated
individuals, it is important to study rhetoric because even the most intelligent
can be drawn into the stickiest of traps because of intricate rhetorical
strategies.
Prompt #1 Response
1) Ethos- "My three decades of experience in public service, my tireless commitment to the people of this community, and my willingness to reach across the aisle and cooperate with the opposition, make me the ideal candidate for your mayor."
The person running for mayor is stating what they have contributed to the community in order to express how their being selected as mayor would be the best option. They began their statement asserting the amount of time they have spent doing great things for their community in order to express not only dedication and loyalty, but also to show how experienced they are. Aside from using credibility from their actions, this person appeals to the fact that they can also cooperate with the opposition exhibiting a sort of social grace.
Pathos- "You’ll make the right decision because you have something that not many people do: you have heart. There is no greater appeal to a person's emotions than through their heart. By saying that they will decide what is right by using their heart a person may experience shifts of emotions. The emotions may vary from guilt to remorse to love.
Logos- "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury: we have not only the fingerprints, the lack of an alibi, a clear motive, and an expressed desire to commit the robbery… We also have video of the suspect breaking in. The case could not be more open and shut."It is logical that with such overwhelming evidence, the accused is beyond doubt guilty. The logic lays simply in all the forms of evidence that reveal who the criminal was.
2)The electoral collage is meeting to choose the next president. In reality, it is the electoral college that takes into consideration the votes from American citizens in order for them to decide who they will vote for. After they have taken into cosideration the total votes from all the states, they debate until each has decided who they would want as president. There is a tie within the electoral college and one person's vote is going to decide who will win presidency for the country. The person will be influenced by both sides, being told who would run the country best. "He will fix the economic issues of our country" "But he will stop abortions." These statements are said to convince the last voter of the best choice for presidency. After carefully careful consideration they choose the best option.
3)Rhetoric is the way some things are said or written in order to persuade a person or an audience to do or choose something. Rhetoric may at times appeal to emotion but it does not take into consideration how it may hurt a person. Its purpose is to simply state the facts that are necessary in persuading the target. It is important to study to be able to recognize its use in daily lives. Whether it be something as simple as choosing a toothpaste at the store to making an important decision that is going to affect a persons future. Without the knowledge of what rhetoric is there is no way to know how we are affected by it in our daily lives.

2. An example of rhetoric in the public sphere which incorporates an audience, exigence, and constraints is Legalizing marijuana. The audience for this debate are all the citizens of the US. Because legalizing the use of marijuana is a state issue, citizens of each state can be individually affected by either the passing of the legalization or failing for the state in question. Constraints are present between people who believe that marijuana should be illegal and therefore should not be able to be sold publicly, and those who believe that marijuana should be legalized in order to increase the economy and public revenue. Constraints regarding the issue of legalizing marijuana is that this is a state power so it this may only be made legal on a state-by-state basis.
3. Rhetoric contains the devices by which everyday actions, words, and advertisement are portrayed and read by their audience. Rhetoric can be used as a way of persuading or encouraging others to think in the same way. This can be expressed through word choice, tone, or body language. I think rhetoric should be studied so we are able to use all aspects of it through our writing, speaking, and everyday actions.

This advertisement features a product called Smart
Water and a celebrity endorser; actress/model Jennifer Anniston. Advertising
campaigns often use a celebrity as a face for their products because the mass
populations are more likely to look up to someone of a higher social status.
Jennifer Anniston is well-known actress and fitness enthusiast, and therefore
seems to have some creditability toward endorsing this product of a health
drink i.e. ethos. Logos is represented
here through the quotation in the center of the image, which states “Smart
because life is best distilled”, indicating that their product is a “smart”
purchase because of its distillation, which would appeal to an audience through
logically concluding that purer water is better for the body, and therefore it should
be purchased. Pathos is exemplified by
the image itself; an attractive celebrity with an easy-going smile speaks to
the emotions of those who want to be attractive and easy-going as well.
Winning an Academy Award is an honor for most
actors, even being nominated is considered a great achievement. Hearing rumors
of who might be nominated is certainly a cause for rhetorical discourse, or an
exigence. Seeing as it is all just rumors, the persons being nominated are
subject to change until it is announced officially. In the rhetorical
situation, an actor might hear a rumor of their nomination and begin campaigning
members of the academy to vote for them and be officially nominated in the
hopes of winning the award. Therefore the audience is anyone is influenced by
the discourse (rumors of nominees), such as other actors, members of the
academy, and anyone who wants the actor to be nominated or does not want the
actor to be nominated. The constraints of the situation might be the audience
finding an interest in the actor’s work (the film they were nominated for) or
the actor themselves, or taking a stance in said actor’s non-official
nomination.

Prompt #1
This prompt has three parts. Try to answer each with 100-150
words.
- Find an example of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos online. It can be
one example that has all three, or three examples that exemplify
each. Put your example(s) in your post so we all can see. Then,
explain to us why/how they exemplify the three concepts.
- Lloyd Bitzer articulated three aspects of the rhetorical
situation: Exigence, Audience, and Constraints. Based on how he
describes them in the article, give us an example of a rhetorical
situation from the public sphere, articulating each aspect of
Bitzer's theory.
- Based on our class from Thursday, try to explain in your own
words what rhetoric is and why we should study it.
